Khadija Shee, mat weaver from Matondoni, explains the process of producing majamvi (rectangular coarse mats made from doum palm fibres) in an interview with Lamu Museums’ curator Mohamed Mwenje in September 2024. The production typically involves material preparation: raw materials from the mkoma (doum palm) are harvested, dried, dyed and then woven into patterns. This video was taken by the Lamu Museums team during a visit in Matondoni together with the Berlin Talking Mats team members.
